Midway Wolf Unit ‘Any U64’ CMOS Errors
Hacked program ROMs for each of the Wolf Unit games that allow game-swapping without the need for a game-specific security PIC have been freely available for a while (I won’t link them here but you might find them if you search for “Any U64”). However, depending on the PCB, conversions to 2 On 2 Open Ice Challenge and NBA (Maximum) Hangtime reportedly did not work correctly due to CMOS RAM issues:
PCB Repair: Ultimate Mortal Kombat III
Problem
Extensive graphical corruption. All graphics ROMs reported bad during self-test.
Colour fault.
PCB Repair: Mortal Kombat II
Problem
Severe graphical corruption. RAM UA11 and UA12 reported bad during self-test:
(There was also a sound issue but I’ll cover that another time).
PCB Repair: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
Problem
No sound in-game. 10 tones followed by a ‘Sound Section Bad’ error during self-test.
(The owner had reported sporadic in-game pauses but I was unable to reproduce them. These occur when the main CPU is stuck waiting for the sound DSP to respond.)
